When it comes to your health, you don’t want to risk following outdated or untrustworthy information. One of the best sites for finding health information is MedlinePlus®.
Brought to you by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, MedlinePlus provides information to patients and their families in language that’s easy to understand. According to their website, “MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. MedlinePlus also contains extensive information about drugs and supplements, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive tutorials, the latest health news, and surgery videos.” Another helpful aspect of the site is its medical dictionary, where you can look up words you don’t understand.

I decided to read Alan C. Bradley’s The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie after seeing the book favorably reviewed all over the Internet. Plus, the book has received numerous honors, including the 2007 Debut Dagger Award and the 2009 Agatha Award for Best First Novel. The Amelia Bloomer Project added the book to the 2010 Amelia Bloomer List, which selects books “notable for feminist content, quality of writing, and appeal to young readers.”
Fortunately for me, the book lived up to its accolades, mostly because of its utterly charming narrator, Flavia de Luce. Flavia is the 11-year-old daughter of a wealthy English widower, Colonel de Luce. When a man dies in their cucumber patch, Colonel de Luce is the main suspect of the murder. In the tradition of the cozy mystery, it is, naturally, up to Flavia to save the day.

JCPL’s Mother Goose and Preschool Storytimes start back up on September 13 after a brief hiatus. Until then, you might try a virtual storytime for children by visiting the TumbleBook Library, a new online service offered by JCPL, or by visiting another free online story site.
TumbleBook Library
TumbleBook Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books that teach kids the joy of reading. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music, and narration to existing picture books. You can read or listen to the electronic versions of the books.
You can access the TumbleBook Library on the computers in the Children’s Library or on the Internet via JCPL’s website. Select the “TumbleBooks” tab under the “Children’s Library” tab at www.jesspublib.org. Follow the directions and link provided.
More Story Sites
Here are some links to other story sites that you can access for free through the Internet:
http://storynory.com/ Storynory provides free downloadable audio stories for kids. The site publishes a new audio story each week, all read by Natasha Gostwick. Storynory’s free iTunes feed means you can play the stories on your iPod. Great for car trips!
http://www.storyplace.org/ From the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, StoryPlace is an interactive digital library for kids. Each online story in the preschool library includes an online activity, a take home activity, a reading list, and a parent’s activity. The online stories for elementary students include print-out activities and reading lists. Available in both English and Spanish.
http://www.magickeys.com/books/ Children’s Storybooks Online currently features 26 original stories with illustrations and text. Some of the stories include audio and animation. Stories are available for children of all ages, including young adults.
http://www.storylineonline.net/ The Screen Actors Guild Foundation sponsors this site, which features videos of SAG members reading children’s books. Activity ideas accompany each book.

Internet search engines such as Google have revolutionized the way we search for information. However, sometimes it can be hard to wade through all those results. How do you know which websites you can trust? How do you make sure that they’re not trying to sell you anything?
That’s where ipl2 comes in. ipl2: Information You Can Trust is the result of a merger of the Internet Public Library (IPL) and the Librarians’ Internet Index (LII). ipl2 “serv[es] the public by finding, evaluating, selecting, organizing, describing, and creating high quality information resources.” The site is a great place to start your online research. The Special Collections page lists print and web resources for such varied topics as the Iraq War, colonial America, and planning a wedding. You can browse web topics by subject or do a simple search. Whether you need information for a history paper or information about how to sell your house, ipl2 links to reliable sources.

This month, JCPL kicks off our new Reel Readers book discussion group, which focuses entirely on books that have been made into movies. We will meet the second Thursday of each month at the library for a book discussion, followed by a viewing of the movie adaptation in the Library Meeting Room.
This month’s book is Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love. After the August 12th book discussion, the book group will enjoy a special treat when they visit AmStar Theatre for a free viewing of the new movie release. As of this posting, there was one opening available for the August meeting. Click here to claim it.

Have you ever wished you had someone who magically knew what you should read next? At JCPL, we are always happy to give reading suggestions, but if you can’t make it in to the library, you might try the Book Seer at http://bookseer.com.
Just enter the title and author of the last book you read. The Book Seer will search Amazon and LibraryThing to offer you reading suggestions.
The Book Seer isn’t perfect. Anything too obscure or literary tends to stump him. But if you tend to read more popular works, it can be a fun way to explore similar titles.

We asked you to Make Waves @ Your Library this summer, and boy, did you ever! Whether it was at our kickoff event, where 1,211 community members celebrated the start of summer reading with water games, pony rides, and a giant slide, or at our final after-hours Movie Night, where 166 people watched Swiss Family Robinson, you made a splash.
In our reading log program, 134 adults read 732 books and turned in 244 reading logs. A total of 81 teens submitted 333 reading logs. And 762 children logged 2,529 reading hours.
In June and July, 466 attendees attended 15 adult summer reading programs, including the popular Art Alive! and HG @ Your Library classes. We had 14 teen programs, with an attendance of 161 teens. JCPL teens especially enjoyed the Funky Flip Flops and Henna for Teens programs. And 3,066 people attended the children’s programs. Highlights included Roger Day’s performance, the Space Painter, and Capoiera of Kentucky.
Programs weren’t just limited to being held inside the library building this summer. JCPL’s Internet 2 connection allowed adults, teens, and children to travel virtually to such places as the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Mote Marine Laboratory. A total of 320 people participated in these virtual field trips.
Thank you for making summer reading such a success! We hope you’ll join us again next year.
