In mid-April, JCPL began offering free, self-guided computer basics classes using online tutorials offered through the Kentucky Elevate America program, a partnership between the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Microsoft.
During the sessions, volunteer computer tutors circulate and monitor the classes, assisting students as they work through the interactive tutorials on everything from hardware and software basics (operating the mouse and keyboard and navigating in Microsoft Windows) to using Microsoft Office 2007 programs such as Word, Excel, and Publisher. The tutorials also cover basic use of the Internet and e-mail, with the additional opportunity for higher levels of computer-based learning.
