JCPL’s June book group will discuss Clay’s Quilt by Silas House, a book which tells the story of young Kentucky coal miner Clay Sizemore as he tries to understand his family’s history. Originally from Laurel County, Kentucky, House writes novels, stories, poems, and plays that focus on rural Appalachia. House published two books in 2009, the young adult novel Eli the Good, and the nonfiction book Something’s Rising, written with Jason Howard. Something’s Rising collects oral histories from people across Appalachia who are fighting mountaintop removal. Other books by House include A Parchment of Leaves and The Coal Tattoo.

If you have ever wondered how JCPL carries out so many of its great services, you may have a volunteer to thank! JCPL’s volunteers perform so many varied and valuable functions which help support the library’s mission, not only on-site here at the library but on behalf of the library out in the community. Specifically, JCPL volunteers provide support for and assistance with everything from implementing our busy programming schedule to tutoring students in computer classes for beginners, to assistance with storytimes and maintenance of our collection. JCPL volunteers also perform outreach functions like delivering library materials to the homebound through the Library Link program and telling stories in daycares, schools, and senior centers through the Spellbinders program.
In mid-April, JCPL began offering free, self-guided computer basics classes using online tutorials offered through the Kentucky Elevate America program, a partnership between the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Microsoft.
During the sessions, volunteer computer tutors circulate and monitor the classes, assisting students as they work through the interactive tutorials on everything from hardware and software basics (operating the mouse and keyboard and navigating in Microsoft Windows) to using Microsoft Office 2007 programs such as Word, Excel, and Publisher. The tutorials also cover basic use of the Internet and e-mail, with the additional opportunity for higher levels of computer-based learning.
